Hanwha Systems begins developing space internet for Korean military

Hanwha Systems has embarked on the task of integrating the tactical networks of South Korea’s Army, Navy and Air Force with a commercial low-orbit satellite communication system.

On Wednesday, Hanwha Systems announced the signing of a 39.8 billion won ($31 million) contract for the ‘Commercial Low-Orbit Satellite-Based Communication System’ project led by the Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute.

The project focuses on establishing a military communication system based on commercial low-orbit satellites to interconnect the existing military tactical network with a commercial low-orbit satellite communication network, enabling the military to exchange large volumes of information swiftly and seamlessly.

Under the contract, Hanwha Systems will be responsible for constructing the low-orbit communication network by 2026, as well as develop mobile electronically steering array (ESA) terminals with enhanced security for vehicles and ships.
