South Korean auto giant Hyundai Motor Group has built the first electric vehicle (EV) factory with a made-to-order manufacturing process in the global automotive industry, showcasing a multi-functional space that brings together research and development (R&D), production, and customer test drives.

Analysts view the move as part of Hyundai Motor Group’s strategy to create a personalized mobility service by moving away from conveyor belt manufacturing, which is optimized for mass production.

The auto giant held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center in Singapore (HMGICS) in Jurong Innovation District in western Singapore on Tuesday, with chairman Euisun Chung and Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in attendance. Hyundai Motor Group took over three years of preparation to build the 44,000-square-meter center, which has a gross floor area of approximately 90,000 square meters and two basement floors and seven floors above ground.

The center employs cellular production, in which a small number of employees are responsible for multiple processes from start to finish to create the finished products and allows for a flexible response to customer needs and market demand. “The facility is part of our preparations for an even more automated future in the next generation,” Chung said. “Automated work can improve quality and reduce costs.”
