Naver News Notice

In response to the mounting controversy surrounding its reply in comments feature for news articles, Naver Corp. has halted the service just five days after its launch.

On Monday, Naver announced the suspension of the feature allowing users to reply within comments with a quoted reference, or replying to a reply. The decision came as concerns arose about potential side effects, such as opinion rigging.

In an official statement, Naver apologized for any confusion caused among users due to the premature discontinuation, acknowledging that the user experience with the feature was not sufficiently established.

But regular commenting on news articles remains unaffected and can be used as before. Naver had recently introduced a feature known as ‘third-tier comments,’ enabling users to reply directly to replies in comments starting from November 16. But this move was criticized as it is seen as potentially intensifying online debates and conflicts on specific issues, potentially leading to a surge in user-engaged ‘comment wars’ ahead of the general election in April 2024.
