In a bid to cement its transformation into a software-centric automaker, South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group is setting its sights on recruiting top talent in Silicon Valley, the epicenter of technological innovation. The move is a strategic step towards advancing Hyundai’s software-defined vehicle (SDV) technology, which promises continuous updates for enhanced functionality and optimal performance, much like smartphones.

According to industry sources on Sunday, 42dot, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, is actively considering establishing a presence in Silicon Valley as its first overseas organization, with a final decision currently pending.

42dot is a company founded by Song Chang-hyeon, Naver’s former Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and was acquired by Hyundai Motor Group back in 2022. The company’s headquarters are located near Yangjae Station in Seoul, and it is currently in the process of building an integrated office complex in Pangyo, Korea’s technology hub. To attract top talent, 42dot plans to expand its presence in Silicon Valley, a renowned global hub for software experts and innovators.

In contrast to the era of internal combustion engine vehicles, the future of mobility hinges on software, making it crucial for automakers to secure skilled software developers. Leveraging its global recognition and growth trajectory, Hyundai Motor Group is expected to invest significantly in recruiting talent in Silicon Valley.

42dot’s presence in Silicon Valley presence is expected to benefit from synergies with Hyundai Motor Group’s global open innovation center, Hyundai Cradle. The two entities are anticipated to collaborate and exchange talent in various aspects of future mobility technology and SDV development.

Hyundai Motor Group has been accelerating its SDV strategy with 42dot at its core. 42dot is also reported to be actively pursuing the establishment of several overseas subsidiaries beyond Silicon Valley.

“Silicon Valley is one region that we are considering for local hiring, but specific details regarding the timeline, scale, and strategy have yet to be confirmed,” a company official said.
