SK on Co., a subsidiary of South Korea’s SK innovation Co., will supply batteries to Swedish electric car brand Polestar.
SK on announced Monday that it has signed a battery supply contract with Polestar for the Polestar 5 model.
Polestar is an electric vehicle brand of Sweden’s Volvo AB. It was launched in 2017 as a joint venture between Volvo and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, Volvo’s majority shareholder.
The Polestar 5 is a four-door grand tourer (GT) that Polestar plans to produce starting in 2025. It is being developed to offer increased luggage capacity while maintaining the ride quality of a sedan at the company’s research and development center in the United Kingdom. It will be built on a custom aluminum platform, sources said. The battery for the Polestar 5 is ultra long with a high content in nickel and boasts a cell length of 56 centimeters. The battery’s cathode material has a nickel content of more than 80 percent, which improves energy density and increases driving range.
