South Korea’s Samsung Engineering Co. is accelerating its efforts in the carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) sector through collaborations with global companies.

Samsung Engineering announced Thursday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Canada’s Svante Technologies Inc. to collaborate in the CCUS field in Asia and the Middle East.

Svante specializes in carbon capture technology, particularly utilizing solid adsorbents and nano-filters for carbon capture. The collaboration aims to modularize and optimize designs for carbon capture facilities in plants.

Samsung Engineering and Svante will work together to make Svante’s modular and standardized carbon capture technology applicable to plant projects. This partnership will form the basis for their joint efforts to target the Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

Earlier this month, Samsung Engineering entered into a joint development agreement (JDA) with U.K.-based Carbon Clean Solutions Ltd. for the development of an onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) for ships.

Carbon Clean is a company with expertise in CCUS technology and is known for its CycloneCC technology, which drastically reduces the size of carbon capture facilities.

Samsung Engineering and Carbon Clean plan to collaborate on developing and validating OCCS-specific carbon capture equipment modules based on this technology.

OCCS, which captures carbon emissions generated during ship operations, is considered one of the most promising alternatives until clean fuels become widely available, and it is expected to see significant demand in the medium term.

With a series of collaborations with global technology companies, Samsung Engineering anticipates strengthening its competitiveness in the CCUS sector.
