The power system equipped in Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) has been named as one of the world’s 10 best engines by a prominent U.S. automotive magazine for the second year in a row.

Hyundai Motor Co. said Friday that the power system of IONIQ 6 was named as one of the 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems winners for 2023 by WardsAuto. Last year, the same award was given to IONIQ 6’s predecessor model IONIQ 5.

The annual awards recognize compelling powertrain advancements that are all-new or significantly improved since 1995 and are highly regarded in the automotive industry, the automaker said.

In line with the accelerating trend toward electrification in the powertrain sector, WardsAuto included propulsion systems in its annual awards starting in 2019.

This year, 32 powertrains installed in new vehicles sold in the U.S. were tested by the WardsAuto judging panel for their performance, efficiency, and technology.

The IONIQ 6’s powertrain system was acclaimed for its outstanding driving performance, fast charging technology, and a single-charge driving range.

An all-wheel-drive IONIQ 6 boasts a maximum output of 239 kilowatts and a maximum torque of 605 newton-meters.

The two-wheel long-range model, equipped with a 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery, achieves a maximum single-charge driving range of up to 524 kilometers.

“Extreme acceleration is available at just about any speed, combined with excellent efficiency,” said Bob Gritzinger, WardsAuto editor-in-chief, calling it “clearly the top of the heap when it comes to battery-electric powertrains and deserving a second year on their list.”

Drew Winter, WardsAuto contributing editor, also acclaimed the IONIQ 6 system, pointing out that few powertrains make the magazine’s 10 best list twice in a row due to fast-changing technologies.

With the IONIQ 6’s win this year, Hyundai Motor Group has now received WardsAuto’s 10 best engines award 16 times since it first won with the Tau 4.6-liter engine in the first-generation Genesis in 2008.

This year’s awards ceremony will take place in Detroit, U.S., in October.
