KakaoTalk’s Alim Talk recently achieved a significant milestone by surpassing a daily maximum message count of 100 million. Alim Talk is a service that enables corporate clients to send informative KakaoTalk messages to users, including those who have not connected as friends on the messaging platform.

The achievement comes as KakaoTalk celebrates its 8th year of service.

According to Kakao Corp. on Friday, the daily message count for Alim Talk exceeded 100 million for the first time in May 2023.

The popularity of Alim Talk as a communication channel is attributable to the diminishing consumer trust in traditional text messages (SMS), prompting institutions and businesses that require mass messaging to turn to Alim Talk for its security and reliability.

According to the Korea Communications Commission, about 7.65 million business messages were sent through domestic and international mass text messaging services in the second half of last year. Among these, a staggering 89 percent, or 6.85 million messages, were classified as spam.

This steep increase in spam messages eroded users’ trust, with an alarming nine out of every ten messages from businesses considered illegal spam.

In contrast, Alim Talk follows a verification process for the sender. Unlike traditional text messages that only identify the sender by their phone number, Alim Talk clearly displays the sender’s identity in their profile, providing users with a safe and trustworthy source of information.

Alim Talk also offers several advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness, convenience, and complementary features. Data show the Alim Talk service saves businesses between 79.7 percent and 86.5 percent in costs compared to those for Long Message Service (LMS) and between 89.4 percent and 92.9 percent compared to those for Multimedia Message Service (MMS).

Kakao said Alim Talk is driving cost savings in the public sector, particularly in areas such as local tax refunds and payment reminders, electronic registration services, and court-issued bail payment notices.
