The South Korean government plans to establish a personal data-sharing system this year before operations in 2025, which will allow citizens discretionary ownership of personal information.

The government announced Thursday measures to promote individuals’ ownership of personal data. Under the plan, the government will develop regulations and framework on personal data this year and create services and infrastructure by next year. MyData will be in operations from 2025.

MyData ensures individuals to have the full discretion to use and offer data without needing to grant permission from organizations.

Individuals can transfer data from one institution to another at their discretion and withhold the data from the organizations if not desired.

“The scope of personal data to be transferred will be expanded across the key sectors, including healthcare and communications,” said Choi Jang-hyuk, vice commissioner at the Personal Information Protection Commission.

MyData will likely be used for various services, such as recommendations for housing and employment, according to the government.
