Samsung Electronics Co. has revamped its organizational structure, creating a new office for future technology that will support the development of new technologies and products, as it sees advanced technology as a breakthrough to overcoming the weak global economy.

According to industry sources on Tuesday, Samsung Electronics’ Device Experience (DX) division established the office for future technology within its umbrella. The DX division is responsible for TV, home appliances, smartphones, and other products. The new office will be led by Kim Kang-tae, vice president at Samsung Research.

The new office for future technology is expected to serve as the control tower for developing new technologies and products within the DX division.

Earlier in October, Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Jay Y. Lee emphasized the importance of talent and technology during an executive luncheon. While highlighting the significance of fostering talents “regardless of gender and nationality,” he also stressed that the company needs to invest in “technology that doesn’t exist in the world.”

Following Lee’s comment, Samsung Electronics established a team dedicated to emerging technologies directly under its research division. Additionally, the emerging tech group was created at major business divisions. These organizations are expected to explore future cutting-edge technologies and make strategic plans.

The Visual Display (VD) division operates a dedicated organization responsible for planning, product development, and verification of the “movable” project, which combines projectors and robots for commercialization.

The Consumer Electronics division set up a segment dedicated to proposing AI strategies and roadmaps for AI-empowered home appliances. Samsung Electronics has been introducing various AI-powered home appliances, including the AI-driven power savings mode that helps energy efficiency.

The research body has established a research unit focused on “smart home AI” under its next-generation home appliance research team. The new unit will focus on advanced research and development related to AI-based home appliances and services.
