T-Map Mobility, a South Korean car navigation service provider under SK Group, announced plans to launch a service called Eco Route on its navigation platform, T-Map, which will guide users to the most energy-efficient routes for electric vehicles.

The Eco Route service, set to be released later this year, aligns with SK Group’s broader efforts in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, catering to environmentally conscious drivers seeking to reduce carbon emissions.

T-Map Mobility unveiled the new service plan during a press conference held in Seoul on Monday. The event marked a significant milestone for the company, as it celebrated surpassing 20 million subscribers to its T-Map service, 22 years after its initial launch.

Currently, T-Map offers various navigation options such as T-Map Recommendation, Minimum Time and Distance, Toll-Free Roads, Highway Priority, and Easy Route. The Eco Route feature will be added to these options and is expected to be available for users starting in the latter half of this year.

The company said that the Eco Route service will not only consider conventional traffic information and driving distances but also consider diverse road environments such as gradients and curves available in their advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) map, guiding drivers to the routes that emit the least amount of carbon. The company also said it plans to expand this service model to include internal combustion engine vehicles in the future.

T-Map, which originated from an idea by SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won in 2002, was initially launched as “Nate Drive” during the era of feature phones.
