South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corp. has joined hands with major international nuclear power companies to drive the small modular reactor (SMR) project in Romania.

The construction division of Samsung C&T on Wednesday announced its memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with Romania’s Nuclearelectrica, E-INFRA, Nova Power & Gas, U.S.-based NuScale Power, and Fluor Enterprises to jointly pursue the construction of a 462 megawatt SMR in Romania.

Romania is currently undertaking a project to replace existing coal-fired power plant in Doicesti, using NuScale’s technology as the basis for SMR. The project aims to commence commercial operation from 2029. Samsung C&T previously invested $70 million in NuScale to secure market dominance and is cooperating with the U.S. company to expand its SMR business in international markets.

During the signing ceremony, the chief executive officers of the participating companies expressed their commitment to collaborate throughout the entire process, including project planning, licensing, design, procurement, construction, financing and more. They also pledged active cooperation to expand NuScale’s SMR business in Europe, with Romania as a central focus.
