South Korea’s parliament passed a bill to allow government support for the infrastructure of urban air mobility (UAM) transportation, which industry insiders expected to have a positive effect on prospective operators, such as Hyundai Motor Co.

A transportation committee under the National Assembly in South Korea approved the bill designed to promote the UAM industry on Tuesday. Under the bill, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has the discretion to approve business projects on vertical takeoffs and landing pads, known as vertiports, for UAM systems.

The bill is also expected to serve as the legal evidence for research, development, and demonstration tests on UAM systems. Following the newly implemented law, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will be able to provide UAM operators with a whole or some financial funds necessary for UAM projects.

The bill came as the guidelines specified by the current air transportation laws are for airports with runways. Industry sources argued that the lack of specific laws on UAM transportation has made it difficult for the government to regulate vertiports and other ground infrastructure for UAM vehicles.

Hyundai Motor, in partnership with other local companies, including Korean Air Lines Co., has been committed to UAM business since 2021. The Korean automaker built a consortium in February to join a UAM project conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
