South Korea’s second-biggest carmaker Kia Corp. is set to reinforce its position as an electric vehicle brand by launching its electric sport utility vehicle (SUV), the EV9, in Europe later this year, where competition for leadership in environment-friendly vehicles is intensifying.

Kia said on Tuesday that it held “The Kia Brand Summit” in Germany for 15 days from May 15, local time, to showcase the EV9 to European media in 20 countries, including Germany, the U.K., France and Italy. This event was designed to introduce the EV9’s European sales model for the first time locally and share Kia’s vision and commitment to electrification in the European market, according to the company.

The three-row seat EV9 is Kia’s second model equipped with Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated EV platform, called E-GMP, after the EV6 SUV launched in 2021. The EV6 won “Car of the Year,” the most prestigious car award in Europe, last year, for the first time among Korean cars.

At this event, Kia also unveiled its mid- to long-term electrification strategy in the European market. The company plans to increase its EV sales in Europe to 93,000 units this year, up 30 percent from last year, with an aim to sell 515,000 EVs in Europe by 2030.

Last year, Kia sold 71,602 units of its three EV models available in Europe, including the Soul EV, the Niro EV and the EV6. Kia aims to increase the share of EV sales in Europe to 74 percent by 2030 from 13.2 percent last year and 17 percent this year.

Kia is also strengthening partnerships with local charging infrastructure companies such as Ionity and Digital Charging Solutions GmbH to support its expansion of EV sales in Europe.
