TSMC to receive more than $5 billion in U.S. grants for chip site

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker that is building a chip plant in Arizona, the United States, is poised to win more than $5 billion in grants from the U.S. Department of Commerce, according to a foreign media report on Saturday.

Citing an inside source, Bloomberg News reported that the Joe Biden administration plans to confirm the plan of supporting a total $52.7 billion won in chip production grants to TSMC, Samsung Electronics Co., Intel Corp., and Micron Technology Inc. based on the CHIPS and Science Act.

TSMC is building a $40 billion advanced chip plant in Arizona but it has put off completion by up to two years due to a delay in U.S. grants and lack of skilled workers.

Arizona is one of the presidential battleground states that will determine the coming presidential election in November.

Samsung Electronics Co., in the meantime, has been in talks with the U.S. government on an increase in federal grants amid its ongoing construction of a $17-billion chip manufacturing plant in Texas.

Intel Corp. is set to win more than $10 billion in federal grants and state loans following an announcement of its plan to build a fab in Ohio.
